How to read a
math book
We can’t read a math book like we read
other books. It takes special approach to do that. There two kinds to
understanding a math text according Chan-Ho Suh. The first is being able to
follow, reconstruct, and proof. Then rewiring one’s brain, so that we can
understand why the theorem is true or the solution works.
In order to do that, there something that we
shouldn’t to do:
1.
Don’t memorize
too much, so we must write down in one cheat sheet.
2.
Don’t start with
the homework problems. The most important is reading and understanding today’s
section of the textbook.
3.
If we can’t
understand something in today lesson, don’t be afraid to go back and relearn
that previous material.
There something that we should do in order to read a
math book:
1.
Make scheme
first for an overview to understand something complex.
2.
Reread with
concentration by highlight important points for study and then read slowly.
3.
Go each step of
each example by write down a complete solution with all steps and make sure we
understand it.
4.
If we still have
any concepts that we can’t understand, we must fill the gaps with go back to
the book and learn, or we can talk and see the instruction outside the class,
or discuss with other student.
5.
Think about what
we have read short of like a more general version of specific case make easy to
learning.
6.
Make it your own
explain for what we have read and learned, if someone else can understand, it
means we understand the material.
7.
If we can’t
understand how to do the homework, go back to the book for similar problems and
make sure we understand how apply it.
